I try to brand myself as someone who doesn’t take things too seriously. Obviously, I have to actually take things seriously, otherwise I wouldn’t care about what I do. But if there’s one thing I love to do, it’s commit to the bit.

Why I Love Absurdism

By Leo Amadeus, 14/10/2024

For those who don’t know, “committing to the bit” is the act of going along with a joke no matter what, to the point of ridicule and beyond. I love committing to the bit because it shows commitment. That’s it. That’s the whole reason. To me, it’s admirable for someone to take a joke so seriously.

Which leads me to my main point – why I love absurdism.

The absurd is an exploration of commitment to the bit, as well as the lack of commitment to anything else (although I’m sure the great masters would hate for me to describe it this way). I love absurdist media because nothing happens. The whole existence of absurdism (when it comes to plot and character development) is entirely unnecessary. This is the greatest commitment to the bit that there is.

That’s not to say that absurdism is entirely pointless. Well, I guess it is. But that’s the point. Well, it’s not the point, because that would mean that there is a point, which there isn’t. Sort of.

Absurdism is an acceptance and embracing of the meaninglessness of life. And I think it’s kind of cute that, according to absurdism, life doesn’t have a meaning at all. And I don’t think it’s worth trying to find your own meaning. I think people should do what they love.

But doing what you love isn’t always feasible. Starving artist, blah blah blah. But, as my favourite artist’s mother (and undoubtedly many others) said, “Do what you have to do in order to do what you want to do.” Easier said than done.

I think that Waiting for Godot is a masterpiece (which is a sentence often followed by several hundred gunshots). I think waiting for anything, God(ot) or otherwise, is futile [see my song “Patience is a Virtue (That I’ve Never Had)”]. But of course, patience is not the absence of irritation, but rather the continued perseverance through it. Sometimes life is so irritating and fruitless that it’s worth buying a lottery ticket just in case you win later that week. Because it’s better to do something hilariously stupid than to give up entirely.
